Romantasy — the fantasy romance genre that's taken BookTok by storm — blends immersive magical worlds with slow-burn romance plots. Dragons, fated mates, fae courts, and swoon-worthy tension all packed into one page-turner.
If you want a love story woven through epic fantasy, romantasy is where genre-bending meets heart-pounding. The canonical trio — A Court of Thorns and Roses, Fourth Wing, and Throne of Glass — defined the genre, but the space has exploded: morally grey rulers, enemies forced together in rebellion, and fated-mates dynamics across every imaginable world. Spice levels run from closed-door to explicit; vibes range from cozy cottagecore to brutal high fantasy.

Romantasy is the fantasy romance genre — fantasy novels where the central romantic plot is equally important to the world-building. Unlike fantasy with a side romance, romantasy makes the love story load-bearing. The term gained widespread use around 2023 via BookTok.
Yes — they're synonymous. "Fantasy romance" is the older descriptive label; "romantasy" is the newer BookTok-popularised shorthand. Both describe novels where a magic-infused world and a central love story carry equal narrative weight.
Romantasy offers escapist world-building plus the emotional stakes of a love story in one package. Post-2023 BookTok discovery, huge releases like Fourth Wing accelerated the genre into mainstream bestseller charts. Readers get both the map-and-magic-system immersion of epic fantasy and the emotional catharsis of romance without picking between them.
Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros) for dragons and enemies-to-lovers spice; A Court of Thorns and Roses (Sarah J. Maas) for fae courts and slow-burn; Throne of Glass (same author) for a longer multi-book journey; From Blood and Ash (Jennifer L. Armentrout) for gods and chosen-one tropes.
The later ACOTAR books (A Court of Mist and Fury onward) sit at the spicier end of mainstream romantasy. Fourth Wing is mid-range. Throne of Glass starts closed-door and opens up as the series progresses. Quicksilver (Callie Hart) is a recent high-spice fae-romance hit.
