Vampires, shifters, ghosts, fae, and every being between human and fully fantastical. Paranormal romance brings supernatural creatures into love stories set in our world (or one close enough).
Paranormal romance (PNR) differs from romantasy by keeping one foot in reality — the supernatural exists, but so does the modern world, urban settings, and recognisable human societies. J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood (18+ volumes of brooding vampire warriors) anchors the modern canon; Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress blends vampire-hunter urban fantasy with central romance; Ali Hazelwood's Bride brought fated-mate PNR to a new BookTok audience. Series are the norm — new couples each instalment tying into a shared mythology — and spice levels run the full spectrum.

Paranormal romance features supernatural beings — vampires, shifters, fae, ghosts, demons — in love stories typically set in or adjacent to the contemporary world. It overlaps with urban fantasy romance and romantasy but keeps more grounding in recognisable modern settings.
Romantasy builds a fantasy world from scratch; paranormal romance puts supernatural creatures into our world. A vampire billionaire in NYC = paranormal. A vampire prince in a fae court = romantasy. The line blurs, and many books straddle both.
PNR centres the love story with supernatural creatures as the setup. Urban fantasy romance centres a supernatural plot (crime, war, mystery) with the love story threaded through. PNR heroines are more often in romance-led arcs; UFR heroines are detectives, mercenaries, or investigators.
Dark Lover (J.R. Ward) for the modern vampire canon; Halfway to the Grave (Jeaniene Frost) for action-oriented vampire romance; Bride (Ali Hazelwood) for the BookTok-era fated-mate vampire wave; Moon Called (Patricia Briggs) for shifter-led PNR crossover.
Yes — it's a defining feature. Most PNR lives in sprawling shared-world series (BDB: 18+ books, Night Huntress: 7+ plus spinoffs, Psy-Changeling: 30+). Each book typically centres a new couple, but world-building, side characters, and lore carry across.
Heat varies widely. Some are closed-door; many reverse-harem shifter series and modern fated-mate releases are explicit. Use the spice filter on individual book pages to calibrate.
